What is Mighty Peace?
Mighty Peace Coffee is a women-and-minority-owned social impact coffee importer serving 9,000 farmers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), working to care for people and the planet while promoting peace. They are providing Congolese people with the necessary tools and resources to change their profession from diamond mining to coffee farming.
Regional Info
Umoja means “Solidarity” in Swahili. This delicious coffee grows in the African Great Lakes Region, South Kivu Province and is produced by the hands of over 11,600 hard-working members. Coffee is a key source of income for many members and helps promote rights for marginalized groups in this region.
Sustainability Efforts
As an organization, Mighty Peace is committed to supporting soil health, biodiversity, and organic regenerative practices such as conservation tillage and cover cropping. Through these methods farmers increase the amount of organic matter in their soils over time, replenishing the land and sequestering excess carbon from entering the atmosphere. This work ensures a healthy and sustainable planet for generations to come.

Growing Peace Trade
“Conflict has plagued the DRC for decades. Intense competition for control over mining areas led to the proliferation of armed rebel groups in the 90s. In recent years, the Congolese-led international peace movement to end the mineral conflicts has led to a shift: local economies are slowly transitioning from conflict, returning to ethical and sustainable business practices. The DRC’S rich tradition of specialty coffee has been preserved and is now becoming the industry’s best kept ‘secret’.
Peace Trade = Fair Trade Organic 2.0. Congolese farmers are full of vibrant optimism and hope for change. Your individual contributions will positively impact the lives of children, women, and men who are dreaming of independence, freedom, and peace. Your purchase of Mighty Peace Coffee directly stimulates economic activity, raising the living standards of hardworking farmers, while ending the cycle of poverty, conflict, and injustice.”
What is a Washing Station?
Washing coffee is the process of separating the seed (bean) from the skin and fruit, and drying it in preparation for hulling and export.
The Tsneya washing station, where Umoja is processed, is one of many operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These stations are managed by groups of a few hundred coffee farmers who co-invest in their construction in order to wash their coffee. This co-investment and oversight affords consistent quality in the region’s coffee output.
Washing stations also allow farmers and cooperatives a route to financial independence. They provide members a higher income resulting from the increased purchase prices for coffee that has been processed. Cooperation profits are returned to members or used for working capital.

Looking to the Future
For the farmers and other members of the Peace Trade, a sustainable income will continue to fund their children’s school fees, allow them to own houses, have healthcare, and buy clothing. The work of Mighty Peace will continue to motivate policy progress at the governmental and community levels, and to provide support, education, and opportunities to survivors of armed conflict.
The DRC’s coffee industry is going through a renaissance and has the potential to become one of the best in the world. Java Central is excited to support and partner with this empowering and beautiful community in the pursuit of growth, happiness, and outstanding coffee!
