Café Tío Conejo
What is "Tío Conejo"?
Tío Conejo Specialty Coffee is a coffee farm, producer and importer of high-end Colombian coffees. Located near Manizales, Colombia, they are a family in the most beautiful sense of the word. “Tio Conejo” means “Uncle Rabbit” in Spanish – a local children’s folktale character symbolizing the tenacity and resilience of coffee growers. Their farm and export relationships are focused on empowering disadvantaged coffee growers by providing access to the specialty coffee market and supporting sustainable changes to Colombia’s very conventional coffee production culture.

Love and Happiness
Colombian people face many challenges in their country for a variety of complex historical, political and economic reasons. However, despite these challenges, Colombians often have an extraordinary spirit of optimism, positivity and resilience in their daily lives.
The folks of Tio Conejo demonstrate this spirit throughout their work in specialty coffee, seeking to share their love and compassion through their unique coffees and the humanitarian mission of their business.
Environmental Care
“Altos del Tio Conejo” is a magical farm settled on a mountainside patch of the Caldas Valley. This farm has been restored from intensive mono-culture farming, commonly found throughout Colombia.
Mono-culture agriculture is one of the most significant problems facing tropical agriculture industries, as it requires clearcutting natural habitats to maintain intensively managed crops. It often requires heavy pesticide and herbicide use, which has destroyed soil biomes globally and polluted the water sources that are foundational to ecosystem health.
Tio Conejo’s farm has restored much of their natural habitat, using agroforestry practices to grow their coffee among native plant and animal species.

Social Impacts
But it wasn’t the coffee quality or their environmental practices alone that inspired us to work with Tio. Their efforts to support and improve life for their colleagues, farm partners and clients make a real difference in their community.
Tio Conejo seeks out farmers who have significant disadvantages in the Colombian coffee industry. They partner with female, LGBTQ, impoverished, or otherwise marginalized folks to support and empower through their coffee business. This work takes some courage as it’s fraught with enormous cultural and economic barriers present in Colombian culture.
We are proud to share these values with Tio Conejo. By purchasing Tio Conejo coffee, we hope to amplify the impact both of our companies make on our world through the human beings we touch along the way.
